More than one in ten babies have vascular birthmarks that appear at birth or shortly afterwards. Pink or mild red birthmarks found on the forehead, eyelids, upper lip, nose and back of the neck are often referred to as stork bites, salmon patches or angel's kisses. The term stork bite is used when referring to a birthmark at the nape of the neck, and the term angel's kiss is used for birthmarks on the forehead or eyelids. Often the term stork bite is used as a catch-all to refer to all birthmarks in this category. Stork bite and angel kiss vascular birthmarks are caused by a dilation of blood vessels in a particular area, causing the skin to appear pink or red. Angel's kiss birthmarks found on the forehead, eyelids, upper lip or nose will become more and more faint as the baby ages, with many children out-growing the birthmark by the age of two years.
